HENRY EDWIN BRIGGS (1856-1895) AND HIS DESCENDANTS

Henry Edwin BRIGGS

Henry Edwin Briggs(1007) was the third son of the eight children of Rawdon Briggs (1007) and Louisa Barff(1010). According to the IGI, based on a member submission for which no source is given, he was born on 28 Dec 1856, at Eastfield, Warkworth, which is in Northumberland, not Yorkshire as listed in the IGI entry. The same source gives the date of his baptism as 26 Jul 1857. His birth was registered at Alnwick, in the Mar quarter of 1857 (vol.10b, p.249). In 1891 he married Georgina Martha TUNNARD(1019), the daughter of Charles Thomas TUNNARD and his wife Georgina. The marriage was registered at Boston, Lincs., in the Jun quarter of 1891 (vol.7a, p.748). They had two sons, both born in Pipestone, Minnesota, USA according to the pedigree drawn up by Noel Currer-Briggs. Henry apparently drank too much, and died aged only 37 in 1895 whilst on a visit to England. His death was registered at Bedford in the Dec quarter of 1895 (vol.3b, p.187), and his wife was left to bring up the two young boys.

Although born in the United States, both sons were, by the time of the 1901 UK census, British Subjects. At that time they were living with their widowed mother, aged only 33 and living on her own means, at 46 St. Augustine Road, Bedford. Their cousin Frederick, son of William Currer Briggs and Laura Carey, was with them.
