WILLIAM CURRER BRIGGS (1861-1927) AND HIS DESCENDANTS

William Currer BRIGGS

William Currer Briggs(1016) was the sixth of the eight children of Rawdon Briggs (1007) and Louisa Barff(1010). According to the IGI, based on a member submission for which no source is given, he was born on 27 Jul 1861 and baptised on 21 Aug 1861 at Birstwith. His birth was registered at Pateley Bridge in the Sep quarter of 1861 (vol.9a, p.62), and my guess is that he was born at Birstwith Hall. He emigrated to the United States, and in the US Federal Census of 1920 the year he first entered the US is given as 1879.

On 12 Feb 1889, according to information on a Carey website he married Laura CAREY (1030), the fourth of fourteen children of Alfred Henry Carey (1831-1880) and Emily Ellen Hunt (1834-?). There is an entry for this marriage in the UK GRO marriages index for the Mar quarter of 1899 (Hampstead, vol.1a, p.949) so it looks as if William went back to the UK to get married. In the 1920 US Federal Census the year of Laura's first entry to the USA is given as 1889. Both William and Laura were naturalized in the US in 1893.

According to the pedigree drawn up by Noel Currer-Briggs, William and Laura had four children, all of them probably born in the USA.

Children of William Currer Briggs(1016) and Laura Carey(1030)

Name Notes
Frederick Cecil Currer Briggs(1063) Born, according to the Noel Currer-Briggs pedigree, in 1899, and died in 1919 in India. In the 1920 US Federal Census he does not appear. In the 1901 English census he is staying with his widowed aunt Georgina Briggs(1019) in Bedford and his age is given as 11, so his year of birth was probably 1889 not 1899.
Dorothy Ethel Briggs(1063) Born, according to the Noel Currer-Briggs pedigree, in 1891, and married Cyrus K. Brown of St. Paul, Minnesota and had two sons and a daughter. The Miniesota Death Index, accessibly via Ancesty.com, giver her date of birth as 10 Aug 1891, and the date of her death as 23 Apr 1980.
Gladys Briggs(1064) Born, according to the Noel Currer-Briggs pedigree, in 1891, and became Mrs Griffith and had one son and one daughter. Died in 1953. In the 1920 US Federal Census, aged 25, she is living with her father in Pipestone, Minnesota and her occupation is given as a music teacher.
Henry Edwin Currer Briggs(1065) Born, according to the Noel Currer-Briggs pedigree, in 1898. Lived in Minnesota and married Florence Jepson and had a daughter and three sons. Died in 1952. His WW1 registration card, dated 12 Sep 1918, gives the date of his birth as 23 Nov 1897, and his occupation as a general service employee in an automobile garage. In the 1920 US Federal Census, aged 22, he is living with his father in Pipestone, Minnesota and is of no occupation. In the 1930 US Federal Census he lis living in Minneapolis, and his occupation is given as city salesman for an automobile company. Also at the address are his wife Florence, and his two elder children aged 6 and 4, so the other two were presumably born after 1930. Also with them is Florence's mother Beatrice Jepson, aged 63, with the letter D in the column for marital condition, which I suppose means widowed.
