• Death: 8 May 1930, Royal Infirmary, Liverpool, Lancashire.(Ratbone Register). The same date is listed in the IGI, based on a member submission with no details as to source. There is a GRO deaths index entry for the Jun quarter of 1930 (Liverpool, 8b, 64), giving his age as 68.
• Burial: May 1930, Unitarian Chapel, Toxeth, Liverpool, Lancs. (Rathbone Register)
• Occupation: lawyer/solicitor and educationalist (Rathbone Register)
• Education:Caversham Hill, Reading; Clifton College, Bristol; Oxford (New College, matriculated 15 Oct 1881, aged 19; B.A. 1885.)
• Father: Philip Henry RATHBONE⁽⁷⁵²⁾ (1828-1895).
• Mother: Jane Stringer STEWARD⁽¹⁸⁹⁾ (1833-1905).

• 1861 Wales Census: aged 1, staying at Ordoria(?) House, Llandudno, with his parents: Philip (37) and Jane (29) and siblings: Alice (6), Edgar (4), Harold (2) and Gerrard (6 mo.), together with four servants.
• 1871 England Census: aged 11 and a pupil at Oakley House Gentleman's School, Reading (St Giles), run by William Watson (50) B.A. Together with him were his elder brothers Edgar (14) and Harold (11). There were 34 boys at the school in total, with ages ranging between 9 and 16, though only three of them, including Oswald, were 11 or under. Besides the head, and presumably owner, of the school, there was one assistant master. William Watson's family comprised his wife and eight children. Also in the household were a housekeeper, a general servant, a cook, two housemaids and two nurses.
• 1881 England Census: not found.
• 1891 England Census: aged 31, single, an underwriter, living at Greenbank Cottage with his parents: Philip (62) and Jane (57) and with his unmarried siblings Edmund (27), an architect, Ethel (21), of no occupation, and three servants: also a married visitor: Lucy GRIFFITH(?), (26).
• 1901 England census: head of household at Briarwood, Carnatic Road, (named after Carnatic Hall, which was built by Baker and Dawson, owners of the privateer Mentor, out of part of the proceeds of the sale resulting from the capture of the French EastIndiaman Carnatic in 1799, according to the Liverpool Pictorial website). This was in Wavertree, Liverpool. Oswald was aged 40, a marine insurance underwriter. Also present was his wife Jessie (28), born in Liverpool, daughter Helen F Rathbone (6), born at Garston, Lancs., daughter Olive F Rathbone (4), born at Garston, and son Christopher (11 mo.), born at Liverpool. There were also a cook, a housemaid and two nurses.

Notes

Oswald is mentioned just once by Robinson (1992) She describes him far more staid than his brother Harold. He is mentioned a number of times in Briggs (1917), both as a visitor in Italy and also at home in England.

Oswald appears in the family portrait taken on the occasion of the marriege of Alice Rathbone ⁽⁷⁵⁴⁾ to William (Willie) Moore⁽⁷⁶⁸⁾ in 1880. The photograph is reproduced in Robinson (1992).

  • Mother: Emma, born in Liverpool (ca.1839/40 - ?).
  • Notes: The 1891 England census shows Jessie to have been one of twin girls, the other being Helen Jane, and that they were the two youngest of six children. They were at 63 Parkfield Road, Toxteth Park. The other children were Emma (26), single, Adam (24), a sugar broker's agent, Mary (23), and Henry (20) a sugar refiner. The household also had a cook, a waitress and two housemaids. The father Adam was a sugar broker and refiner. The children were at the same address in the 1881 England Census.
