Census data
- England Census 1871: Aged 4, already described as a scholar, living at Greenbank
Cottage, Toxteth Park, Liverpool, with his parents: Philip (42) & Jane (37) and siblings:
Alfred S. (17), Herbert R. (9), Edmund H. (7) and Ethel M. L. (1). a visitor: Allen BRODERICK
(b. c1847) and six servants.
- England Census 1881: None of the children are at Greenbank Cottage, and my guess
is that he was at Clifton College, which he left at the end of the 2nd term of 1882, when
he was 15 or 16 (Clifton College Register).
He emigrated to New Zealand prior to 1893, became a succssful journalist, and was the
editor of the New Zealand Graphic, Ladies Journal and Youths Companion. This journal
was founded by
Henry Brett in 1890, introducing photo-engraving to New Zealand.
