Stowell family history - Hugh Ashworth Stowell and descendants

HUGH ASHWORTH STOWELL AND HIS DESCENDANTS

Hugh Ashworth Stowell⁽¹⁶²⁾ was the eldest child of Canon Hugh Stowell⁽⁷⁰⁾ and Anne Susannah Ashworth⁽⁷¹⁾. He was born on 27 Sep 1829, while his father was still the Vicar of St. Stephen's, Salford, and Hugh Ashworth was baptised at that church on 16 Nov 1829, probably by his father. According to the Alumni Oxoniensis 1715-1886, he matriculated at Brasenose College, Oxford, on 22 Jun 1848, aged 18, and was a scholar 1848-52. He took his BA in 1852 and his MA in 1855. He took holy orders, and was appointed perpetual curate of Christ Church, The Dhoon, Maughold, in the Isle of Man on 28 Aug 1858, where he stayed until 1863. From 1863 to 1865 he was perpetual curate of Warslow and Elkstone, Staffordshire, and then rector of Breadsall, in Derbyshire, from 1865 until his death on 16 Mar 1886.

On 13 Jan 1859 he married Annie Isabella La Mothe⁽⁹⁰³⁾ (1835-1889) at Maughold, Isle of Man. There is a large section on the La Mothe family available on the web as part of the Manx Notebook website, and I have drawn on this, as well as on the pedigree chart B-S829 drawn up by John Arthur Stowell, for the sections which follow. Hugh and Anne had three sons.

Rev. Hugh Frederick La Mothe Stowell⁽⁹⁰⁴⁾ (1806-1889)

Baptised at Christ Church, Dhoon, on 11 Dec 1859. Lincoln College, Oxford, matric. 15 Oct 1878, scholar 1878-82, BA 1882, MA 1886. Took Holy Orders and was appointed Rector of Ovington, Hants. Married first, Annie Davenport Jones in about 1886, by whom he had three children.

Hugh Oswald Douglas Stowell⁽⁹⁰⁸⁾, who was born 08 Oct 1887 at Lambeth, and who died, unmarried, on 12 May 1917 in France, a lance corporal.

Frederick Bromfield La Mothe Stowell⁽⁹⁰⁹⁾, who was born in 1890 in Lambeth and died, unmarried and aged only 25, in Kingston in 1915.

Annie Isabelle Stowell⁽⁹¹⁰⁾, who was born on 05 May 1895 at New Arlesford, and who died, unmarried and aged only 22, in 1917 at Arlesford.

Hugh Frederick's first wife died in 1943 at Winchester. He married again, on 07 Feb 1946 at Winchester, Mary Eirene Agnes Webber (née Brand), a widow (?). There was no issue from this second marriage. Hugh Frederick died in 1948 at Winchester, Hants., aged 88.

Ernest Alfred Crewe Stowell⁽⁹⁰⁵⁾

Born in 1868 at Shadlow and baptised on 20 Dec 1869 at Breadsall. He took his B.A. at Queens College, Oxford, and became Classical Master at Carlisle Grammar School, and later at Kingston Grammar School. He married his cousin Eleanor Edith La Mothe (1867-1955) in 1891 at St. Olave's, Ramsey, Isle of Man, and they had five children.

Edgar La Mothe Stowell⁽⁹¹²⁾, who was born in 1893 at Toxteth Park, Liverpool, and who died, unmarried(?), on 22 Nov 1956 in Lezayre, Isle of Man, aged 63. He left his house, Keramor House, to his nephew Richard Hugh La Mothe Stowell.

Hugh Arnold La Mothe Stowell⁽⁹¹³⁾, who was born on 24 Jun 1895 at Carlisle. In 1926 he married Julia Harris⁽¹³⁰⁶⁾ in Victoria State, Australia, and had children; two sons and two daughters.

Vere Ernest Stowell⁽⁹¹⁴⁾, who was born in 1900 at Kendal, and who died, unmarried(?) and aged 61, on 03 Jul 1961 at Lezayre, Isle of Man.

Roger La Mothe Stowell⁽⁹¹⁵⁾, who was born in 1904 at Kendal. His name appears in the Australian Electoral Rolls for 1937, living in Windsor, Macquarie, NSW, a clerk. In 1936 he married Lily Parker⁽¹³⁰⁷⁾,in Victoria State, Australia. Her name also appears in the same electoral roll. I do not know whether they had children. Roger died in 1959, aged 55 (VIC deaths index 1959, no.2320), and there is an entry in the VIC probate index for a Lily Stowell, widow of Northcote, who died on 11 Aug 1979 which may be that of his wife.

Denise La Mothe Stowell⁽⁹¹⁶⁾, who was born on 07 Feb 1913 at Kingston, who married Philip John William HARRIS⁽⁹¹⁷⁾ in 1938 in Victoria State, Australia, and had issue.

Vere Arthur Stowell⁽⁹⁰⁶⁾, OBE

Born in 1873 at Shadlow. Studied at Corpus Christie College, Oxford. Took his Indian Civil Service Exam in 1895, and arrived in India on 07 Dec 1896. Ended up as an Assistant Commissioner in the I.C.S. On 06 Oct 1900 he married Emmeline Margaret Cumming (ca.1875-1947) at Christ Church, Mussooria, India. They had three children.
