Rev William Hendry Stowell

William Hendry Stowell(241) was another Stowell who moved to the mainland. He became minister of St. Andrew's Chapel, North Shields, Northumberland, in 1821. From 1834 to 1850 he was Head of the Independent College, Rotherham, W. R. Yorks., and then from 1850 to 1856 was President of Cheshunt Theological College. He has an entry in chapter 2 of Manx Worthies, and also in the Dictionary of National Biography.

In Jul 1821 he married Sarah Hilton(632) at Blackburn, Lancs., and they had nine children.

Sarah Stowell(633) ca. 1832 - ca. 1862. Born in North Shields, Northumberland and died in Newfoundland. Married Rev. Charles Pedley(634) (ca. 1821 - ?) on 25 Dec 1849, at Rotherham, and they had seven sons, presumably in Newfoundland. After Sarah's death her younger sister Elinor went to Newfoundland and looked after her boys.
Anne Stowell(635) Born ca. 1824 in North Shields. Married the Rev. William Hall Jackson(636) on 23 Jul 1846 at Masborough Chapel, Rotherham. At the time of their marriage he was a dissenting minister, and was Master of Carlton Hill College in about 1862. Later he took orders in the Church of England and was Vicar of Marston on Dove, Staffordshire. According to J. A. Stowell, they had three sons.
Rev. William Stowell(637), B.A. Born 30 Oct 1825 in North Shelds, Northumberland. Was variously an Independent Minister, Plymouth Brethren preacher, editor of newspapers and journalist, schoolmaster and finally Independent Minister again. He married Mary Elizabeth Cowen(638) (9 Jan 1828 - 30 Jun 1887) at Masborough Independent Chapel, Rotherham on 29 Nov 1848, and they had 12 children. For further details see the separate page.
Esther Stowell(639). Born ca. 1827 in North Shelds, Northumberland. Was at one time secretary to Dr Bernardo. Did not marry.
Rev. Hugh Stowell(640). Born May 1831 in North Shelds, Northumberland. Went to Australia ca. 1852 and returned ca. 1872. Took Holy Orders and was ordained curate in 1872. Rector of Ardkneen, Northern Ireland, 1880 to his death on 11 Jun 1901. He married Ellen Elwyn Moore(641) (ca. 1833-1914) in 1855 at Brisbane, (then NSW, but Queensland from 1859). According to J. A. Stowell they had five children.
Hilton Stowell(642). Born 1837 in Kimberworth, Rotherham, W.R. Yorks. and baptised on 30 Jul 1837 at Masborough Independent Chapel. He was a bank clerk and lived in Walthamstow and Acton. He married Jane Mary Rose(643) (1850-1945) on 05 Aug 1872 at South Mimms, Middlesex, and they had five children. Hilton died on 10 Apr 1904 at Acton, Middlesex.
Thomas Stowell(644). Born 29 Jul 1839 in Kimberworth, Rotherham, W. R. Yorks. Died in 1843, an infant.
Jane Stowell(645). Born 02 Jul 1842 ca. 1827 in Kimberworth, Rotherham, W. R. Yorks. Sailed for Madras, India on 15 Sep 1862 on the Jason. Married the Rev. William Talbot(646) on 01 Jan 1863 at Royapettah, Madras, and they moved on to Ceylon. William Talbot (22 Oct 1829 - 22 Oct 1899) was a Methodist missionary in Ceylon and Head of Jaffna Boys High School for 5 years. They had four children.
Elinor Stowell(647). Born 14 Aug 1844 in Kimberworth, Rotherham, W. R. Yorks. She went to Newfoundland to look after her sister Sarah's family when Sarah died. Elinor did not marry.

William Hendry Stowell died on 02 Jan 1858 at Barnsbury, Islington, of typhus. He was only 57.
